Billions of dollars are spent each year on lottery tickets in the United States, with people hoping to land the jackpot.
It also remains one of the industries untouched by innovation, with the majority of tickets still bought in stores and printed on paper.
Jackpot.com is working to change this.
It is pulling the lottery into the 21st century by allowing individuals to order official state lottery tickets from their mobile phones, tablets, or computers, making it easier than ever to enjoy their favorite draw games and scratchers.
Since launching in the United States in 2022, the company has expanded into seven states with plans for further expansion.
And it’s brought in Primer to help accelerate its growth, ensuring it seamlessly complies with the different in-state regulations and delivers a seamless payment experience to its growing legion of customers.
"Payments are at the core of our operations," emphasizes Justin Friedman, Head of Trust & Safety at Jackpot.com. "Primer is helping us elevate our payment game to bring a first-class experience to more customers across the United States."
Building a compliant payments foundation from day one
From the outset, Jackpot.com needed to build payments that could meet strict compliance requirements across multiple U.S. states.
Each state has its own rules to protect consumers, many of which directly affect how customers can pay for lottery tickets. As Jackpot.com expanded, navigating these requirements became an increasingly complex task.
At the same time, the team was also focused on improving the customer experience, with better payment method coverage, stronger authorization rates, and a more seamless checkout flow
Together, this created a significant strain on its internal teams.
"We’re a young company with ambitious goals," Justin says. "And we found our engineers were spending an excessive amount of time on payment-related tasks."
What should be simple changes, such as adding a new payment method or modifying the checkout page, could take the team months. And the result was growing bottlenecks that threatened to slow the business down.
"It was unsustainable," Justin says. "So we made the change and brought Primer on board."

Choosing Primer as its unified payment infrastructure
Justin first connected with Primer at exactly the right moment.
"Primer reached out, and it was a case of being in the right place at the right time," he explains. "We met the team and liked many of the offerings straight away."
Ease of use was a major differentiator. Since integrating Primer, Jackpot.com's payments team can manage most payment-related tasks without pulling in engineers.
"With just a few clicks, I can add new payment methods, customize the checkout experience, design workflows aligned with regulatory and business requirements, and monitor performance through a centralized dashboard," Justin says.
Primer’s SDKs also played a critical role. By embedding Primer’s native SDK directly into the Jackpot.com app, checkout became fully integrated into the customer journey, and the team gained the ability to iterate without full app releases.
"That agility has been transformative," Justin says. “We can update the checkout experience rapidly and keep improving at pace.”
The impact on customer experience was immediate, and Jackpot.com has significantly reduced checkout drop-off and support inquiries related to payment issues.
The team also expanded its payment mix. Apple Pay, which had taken months to attempt to implement on the legacy stack, moved from testing to production in just a few days with Primer.
"The one-click checkout experience has been a game-changer," Justin says. "It now drives a substantial portion of our payment volume in eligible states."
With the Primer Checkout, Jackpot.com has full control over checkout design and can actively test which payment methods convert best. The team has also begun piloting ways to encourage customers toward payment methods with higher conversion rates or lower processing costs.
"The ease of iteration is what makes this possible," Justin says. "We can test, learn, and improve quickly, and do it at scale."
Executing complex payment logic without complexity
That same flexibility at checkout also extends behind the scenes, where Jackpot.com needs to manage complex payment logic driven by regulation, performance, and business rules.
This is where Primer Workflows stand out.
"They make it straightforward for a Payment Manager like myself to execute a complex payment strategy tailored to our needs," he says.
Using drag-and-drop components and standardized conditioning logic, the team has built workflows that support both regulatory compliance and performance optimization, without needing to understand the quirks of each payment scheme.
"Some workflows block credit card payments in markets where they’re not compliant," Justin explains. “Others optimize transaction flows for customers. And we can update them instantly as our needs change."
While many providers claim to offer no-code tools, Justin sees Primer as delivering on that promise.
"It’s been transformative, enabling us to execute complex payment strategies effortlessly," he says.
Driving resilience and performance at scale
Since adopting Primer, Jackpot.com has seen measurable improvements in performance. For instance, authorization rates have improved by several percentage points, delivering a meaningful revenue impact.
And that performance was maintained during the company’s peak moments, such as the recent mega jackpot Powerball draws in September and December 2025. Even under elevated demand, payments continued to process reliably, with no disruption to performance or the customer experience.
Looking ahead, the team is actively exploring new payment methods, including bank transfers, to reduce processing costs and offer customers more choice. Bank transfers are particularly attractive due to their lower cost profile compared to card-based methods. It is also exploring Fallbacks to recover qualifying declines and further strengthen overall performance.
Building for the next phase of growth
Payments remain a key enabler of Jackpot.com's growth strategy.
For Justin and his team, the goal is clear: deliver a compliant, high-performing payment experience that keeps pace with customer expectations.
And with Primer, they have the foundation to do exactly that.
